Purpose of The Role
The Chief Economist will be responsible for all economic related information to shape and influence economic policy and regulations that could impact directly on the automotive industry. The incumbent will manage and maintain all auto specific economic policy strategies on behalf of the automotive industry in South Africa. The Chief Economist will also analyse emerging domestic and global automotive business trends, assess and examine key automotive-related topics and issues and develop positions on how the industry should respond or manage policy outcomes.

PARTNERSHIP | CONSISTENCY | TRUST
- represent the automotive industry at all key strategic economic policy discussions and forums to influence and shape future automotive policy direction;
- conduct or commission research and analysis of current developments and future trends in the South African automotive market;
- develop and maintain strategic relationships with key contacts in Government, academia, and the broader business community;
- serve as an expert resource for the auto industry on economic issues, and analyse economic trends to forecast future business conditions and publishing reports on those forecasts;
- develop and recommend changes to industry policies based on economic data and findings;
- meet with regulators and other Government officials to discuss current economic conditions and potential impacts on the auto industry;
- periodically conducting research on economic topics such as consumer spending patterns, labour market trends, and investment opportunities;
- conduct analysis of economic data to track patterns over time, and prepare presentations on economic trends or financial performance for internal or external stakeholders;
- lead naamsa’s special economic and tax policy research projects;
- collate and prepare the naamsa State of the Auto reports;
- study the production or manufacturing process of the automotive industry in South Africa and develop industry-wide policy mandates that can be canvassed through and with different Government departments;
- manage industry recall campaigns strategies, the automotive grey import strategy and support our members in the development of automotive industry compulsory standards specifications;
- conduct economic research and analysis to support the development of auto specific policies;
- conduct research, write reports, papers, and articles on economic trends, and forecasts on economic indicators such as inflation rates, interest rates, and unemployment rates;
- present findings to the naamsa CEO Advisory Council, the Board of Directors, members, and other audiences; and
- act as Chairperson of the naamsa Technical Committee.
4. Essential Requirement Skills and Attributes
- a Master’s degree and/or an equivalent post-graduate qualification in economics, mathematics or another closely related field;
- a minimum of 10 years with senior operational or management experience;
- data analysis – understanding of indices, fundamentals and analytical data, etc;
- must be proficient in working with numbers, analyse tables and complex data sets;
