2. About The Role

Purpose of The Role

The Chief Technology Officer will lead all industry New Energy Vehicle discussions, engagements, and assist with the drafting of policy discussion documents providing the rationale for the South African automotive industry’s transition to NEVs. The incumbent will initiate and provide the industry’s long-term NEV strategy for South Africa and deliberately support the roll-out of a public charging infrastructure projects along with the naamsa procurement compliance requirements.

3. Key Responsibilities

  • support naamsa lobbying for the advancement of New Energy Vehicle specific regulations, government policies, legislation, and position papers on NEVs in South Africa;
  • initiate and actively participate in the drafting of industry policy positions and documents on key NEV topics for the industry, including the naamsa Thought Leadership Paper and any other documents that would support with the development and finalisation of the country’s White Paper on NEVs;
  • be involved in engagement discussions with key Government officials and follow-up on actions and activities on the industry’s NEV transitional requirements;
  • actively participate, shape and influence in the work and contribute to the outcomes of the EOC Technology Workstream;
  • support and conduct naamsa specific evidence-based review of SAAM35 assumptions on Technology;
  • extend the NEV Roadmap to include the truck and bus NEV transitional priorities;
  • consider all NEV public charging infrastructure requirements and standards for the industry;
  • capture data on public charging points in South Africa in collaboration with third-party partners;
  • preside over and facilitate any research work to be conducted by industry on NEVs; and
  • act as Chairperson of the New Energy Vehicles Committee.

4. Essential Requirement Skills and Attributes

  • a post graduate degree in projects management, commerce or related fields;
  • 10 years management experience at senior level;
  • an articulate executive with superior intellect, professionalism and aptitude for learning;
  • an accomplished facilitator and negotiator interacting internally and externally;
  • must demonstrate the ability to secure buy-in at all levels within and outside naamsa;
  • shows a strong understanding of the automotive business; regulatory; social and political environment; and understands factors; trends and issues which could influence the naamsa’s business performance; and
  • a strong communicator with a clear and concise presentation style, who can convey, with consistency, naamsa’ vision in a manner that is readily accessible and understandable to all.
